If you have limited income you may be able to get help to pay your Medicare costs

To qualify for a Medicare Savings Program (MSP) you must meet the following income guidelines and In New York State there are no resource /asset limits. (The standard $20 monthly income disregard has been included in these guidelines)

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB):

Monthly Income Limits:

$1,083 - single person 

$1,457 - married & living together
 

  • Helps pay for Medicare Part A and/or B premiums, coinsurance and deductibles
  • QMB’s - has no retroactivity
 

Specified Low Income Medicare Beneficiary Program (SLIMB):

Monthly Income Limits:

$1,296 - single person

$1,744 - married & living together

  • Helps pay Medicare part B premium
  • Must have Medicare part A in order to be eligible for program
  • SLIMB's - 3 months retroactive

 

Qualified Individual (QI):

Monthly Income Limits:

$1,456 - single person

$1,960 - married & living together

  • Pays for Medicare Part B premium
  • Must have Medicare part A in order to be eligible for program

 

  • If your income is higher than the limits above and some of your income is from work you may still qualify for MSP benefits - Income earned from working is counted at less than half.
  • If you enroll in MSP you automatically get Extra Help – the federal low income subsidy program that helps pay your Medicare prescription drug (Part D) costs.
  • The cost of certain health insurance premiums can be deducted from your income to qualify for MSP
