Civil Service Exam Announcements and Applications
Unless otherwise stated, all candidates are required to be legal residents of Clinton County for one month immediately preceding the date of examination. Appointing authorities may give preference to legal residents of their jurisdiction.
Check the exam hotline (518) 565-4455 and this web site frequently to see what examinations are currently being announced.
NOTE: If you are interested in taking a Civil Service examination for Clinton County you must apply for the examination when it is being announced at our office. Each Clinton County examination requires that you pay a $12.50 application fee. Only checks or money orders are acceptable for payment. Payment must accompany your application unless you qualify for an exam fee waiver. Check the exam announcement for details. An Exam Fee Waiver Form must be completed and submitted with your application. You may download a copy of the Application for Examination or Employment (this form requires Adobe Acrobat reader to be installed on your machine - see below). Also, you must attach documentation as proof of meeting the minimum qualifications (e.g., proof of high school, college transcripts ... see exam announcement for details).
VETERANS: Please provide a copy of your DD214 indicating character of discharge. Complete and return the Application for Veterans Credits. Complete the following only if you are claiming credits as a disabled veteran: Disability Record Authorization.
VETERAN'S RIGHTS FOR EXAMS
ALTERNATE TEST DATE POLICY: Clinton County has an Alternate Test Date Policy which allows a candidate to participate in the examination other than the set examination date. Please click on ALTERNATE TEST DATE POLICY for details.
STUDY GUIDES: Check with the local bookstores or libraries to see if they have study guides. You will need the title of the exam. It is also helpful if you review the subjects of examinations found on the exam announcement. The State of New York Department of Civil Service has published booklets for candidates who are applying for jobs with either New York State or local government. Candidates who are unfamiliar with the testing process will find them particularly helpful. These publications, such as "Civil Service Examinations: How to Take a Written Test" are available on the State of New York Department of Civil Service's web site: http://www.cs.state.ny.us/testing/localtestguides.cfm.
UPCOMING CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS
OPEN-COMPETITIVE EXAMS require that you complete a Clinton County application for examination, meet the minimum qualifications, and pay the filing fee by the specified closing date. To be considered for a permanent position, you must score among the top three interested candidates.
CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT EXAMS are examinations for which we accept applications and filing fees anytime. There is no specified closing date. The scores for these examinations, regardless of exam date, are interfiled with existing candidates’ scores to form a constantly changing eligible list. Salaries for these positions are dependent upon the location.
